It’s busy at Westport Rivers. Here is what we have going on:
Wines by the Class: The Learning Methode:
We are hosting “Wines by the Class” in our Wine Bar. These casual seminars will begin at 6pm and last an hour or two and will highlight a wine, wine making or vineyard related topic and will always include an informative wine tasting.
Our amazing staff led by aficionados Corey Nuffer and Elizabeth Koczera will be your “guides” for these evenings. We will also have some additional surprises for attendees. These seminars are only $10 for wine club members and $20 for non-members.
Here are all the details:
There is NO charge to swing by the Wine Bar during the Friday seminars and enjoy a drink with friends. You might even learn something. However, if you want to participate in the class (and taste wine and receive any seminar discounts on wine) it is $10 for wine club members and $20 for everyone else. All you have to do is call 508-636-3423 extension 2 during business hours and we will get you on the list. Just let the staff know when you would like to attend. Once you have signed up there are no cancellations so please make sure you are able to attend. If you have any questions please email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Saturdays are free to everyone.
Fri, February 27th: Seminar: “Wine + Food Pairing: Part II”
“Wine is really the last ingredient in your dish and not necessarily an accompaniment to your meal.” These words were spoken years ago at a wine seminar led by Master Sommelier Randa Warren. I (Corey) took notes and lived years trying to make sense of this idea. Let’s explore this sometimes intimidating affair together with careful attention to the science behind what we, sometimes, naturally intuit. $10 for Wine Club and $20 for everyone else. Call the shop to reserve your space: 508.636.3423 extension 2.
Sat, February 28th: Wine Trivia Night
While there will be bonus questions involving film, music and some of the other usual suspects, this trivia night will be all about wine. From general knowledge all the way to Westport Rivers-specific. Winner gets a free bottle of wine from manager Alan Stewart’s own personal collection. We had a blast in January so let’s do it again! Second- and third-place winners will also receive something special.
Fri, March 6th – Seminar: “Beyond Chardonnay: The Case for Obscure Wines”
Rkatsiteli, Gruner Veltliner, Pinot What? – From pronunciation to expectation, lesser-known varietals can be intimidating but so delicious. WPR is one of the rare US wineries releasing 100% versions of these wines. Join us for a night where dispelling the mystery will be both delicious and empowering! Seating limited to 25 people. $10 for wine club, $20 for everyone else. Call the shop to pre-pay and reserve seating 508.636.3423, extension 2.
Sat, March 7th – Movie Night! “Bottle Shock”
Based on the true story of how American wines shocked the world and established themselves for serious consideration for the world palate, “Bottle Shock” is not only educational but hilarious.
Fri, March 13th – Seminar: “Theology of Wine Tasting: The Present Moment, Tannins and Bouquet”
We’re not trying to form a wine wine cult, we promise! From spending a lot of time trying to detect what’s invisible to the holy grail of Riedel and beyond, there’s much to be gained from taking a look at what religion has mastered and making your wine experience that much more delicious and rewarding. Seating limited to 25 people. $10 for wine club, $20 for everyone else. Call the shop to pre-pay and reserve seating 508.636.3423, extension 2.
Sat, March 14th – Book Club Night! “Judgment of Paris” by George M. Taber
The film “Bottle Shock” dramatizes this event, and we’ll discuss the book written by the only reporter who covered it, Time reporter George M. Taber. For you real wine nerds, this book is essential reading, and we’ll be discussing this while sipping on our delicious wines. Get the book, read it, watch the movie and take notes and then come on over to discuss.
Fri, March 20th – Seminar: “Champagne and Oysters!”
Sarah from Cuttyhunk Shellfish Farms will be on hand to deliver delicious raw-bar delicacies at market price. If you don’t know about Cuttyhunk, they’re unique in that their oysters are allowed to grow in nets hanging in the water column, feeding on the phytoplankton, until they reach market size, culminating in this naturally briney, tender and sweet New England complexity. Liz will be leading the class on the Champagne Methode and tasting out all our delicious sparklings and then some. Seating limited to 25 people. $10 for wine club, $20 for everyone else. Call the shop to pre-pay and reserve seating 508.636.3423, extension 2.
Sat, 3.21 – Art Night
More than sketching and painting a still life while sipping on something delicious, we’ll use mixed media. Translation: paints, inks, stencils, handmade paper, cutouts from magazines, old patterns, workbooks and more! Bring your own photos, favorite quotes or whatever you’d like to include. Limited to 10 people but wine bar (as always on Saturdays) will be open for regular wine and food service.Seating limited to 10 people. Call the shop to reserve seating 508.636.3423, extension 2.
Fri, March 27th – Seminar: “The Dosage Trials with Paull Goodchild”
Our newest vintage of Brut RJR (2007) is being riddled and disgorged, the final steps of the Champagne Method. This is the last chance the winemaker has to influence a bubbly by way of the dosage-a sugar and wine solution. In order to determine the proper amount of dosage, we hold trials where we taste the wine in a range of sweetness. Join us for just such an interactive appraisal of this pending vintage. Truly a special seminar! Seating limited to 25 people. $10 for wine club, $20 for everyone else. Call the shop to pre-pay and reserve seating 508.636.3423, extension 2.
